Should You Work? Eat?

Yes – you’ve heard “everyone has to sacrifice” to reduce the deficit.  And the first things on the chopping/reducing block seem to be social security and medicare.

So – who is the “everyone”?  Well, seniors, of course.  Especially seniors who only have social security on which to live.  They will be super-sacrificing.  Meanwhile, the people who plan these “sacrifices” are all the well-to-do members of congress (yes, they are all well-to-do) who don’t have ANY idea what it is to sacrifice.

Even with social security and medicare still here, many seniors are currently having fiscal issues.  For instance, read Strapped seniors trying to hang on (April 2011), which noted that 23% of seniors depend on Social Security for 90% of their expenses.   S0, should we blame the seniors for not saving?

Actually, no.  Many had savings that were wiped out by the stock market and by the shenanigans of our banks.  Remember? – this was just before President Obama was elected.  And many of the banks were “too big to fail.”  But they failed many senior citizens, and those about to become senior citizens.

WORK?

What can seniors do?  Well, one idea put forth in How to Retire on Social Security Alone is to go back to work!  (We’ll look at other ideas in a later blog.)

According to the NY Times, May 18, 2012: The Number of Those Working Past 65 Is at a Record High.  In fact, “one in nine American men over the age of 75 was working in April [2012].”   Good grief!  And “More than a third of men ages 65 to 69 are working, as are more than a quarter of women.”

This could mean that older folk are good reliable and interested workers.  Or it could mean that some people simply need to work.  But the fact is that more people are working late into their 70s.

Need a job?  Here’s some help:

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is a “nonprofit service and advocacy organization” with a mission to “improve the lives of millions of older adults, especially those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged.”

They run a Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCEP) funded by the U.S. Labor Department.

BUT – check out the map of offices!  There are no centers in the upper northeast of the U.S.   Or, in fact, throughout the Midwest.

There are also several local web sites that are a good place to begin a search.  Some of these are:

*SeacoastCareers.com (linked to Seacoastonline)
*Seaside Associates (temporary and permanent positions)
*SeacoastJobs.com

EAT?

Seniors can eat better!   Here are a couple of ideas and programs:

**** The National Council for Aging runs the National Center for Benefits Outreach & Enrollment.  This covers six vital areas for seniors.  Let’s look at Food & Nutrition.  And, under this heading, let’s look at the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP).  It provides “low-income seniors with coupons that can be exchanged for eligible foods (fruits, vegetables, honey, and fresh-cut herbs) at farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs.”

The New Hampshire administrator is Margaret Murphy, phone: 603-271-4546, and email: mmurphy@dhhs.state.nh.us (see state list of representatives).  Call her and get your coupons!!!

****The AARP Foundation provides funding for vegetable gardens, which are a great way to get good and healthy food.  Like any grant, you have to apply.  Collective Roots Helps Seniors Grow Vegetables and Income describes the support of a non-profit (Collective Roots) to grow food for seniors, under the AARP’s Hunger Impact grants.

****And if you have a small patch of land, or a balcony for pots, or even a wading pool, or maybe an old tire – you can grow your own (see Urban Agriculture, a guide to container gardening) – even in New England or New Hampshire!

Volunteer!

Volunteering is a great way to get out one or two days (or mornings, or afternoons) a week.  And while you get this feel-good opportunity, you help someone, too.  What could be better?

Here’s how you start: get online and find web sites that list places to find opportunities that might fit your interests.  Some of these web sites may be listed by region – or by state.  So, if you don’t find what you want on one site, check out another.

But of course I will give you a jump-start.

**** Volunteer NH says “service isn’t just nice, it’s necessary.”  And that means necessary for both you and the people you are able to help.  There are places on this web site that are great.

then FINALLY you get to a place to search for volunteer opportunities (yes, I know, many web sites are difficult to navigate – so be patient)

  • To search the first time just ignore the first few choices, and simply fill in your zip code (such as 03801) and choose the distance you might prefer (or just leave it at 5 miles), then click on Search
  • Then try different ways to search, depending on your interests and expertise

**** Volunteer Match is a national web site, and is pretty good.

  • It allows you to fill in your town or zip code, and state right on the front page.  You can either fill in a key word for your interest, or not. Then click on Search
  • Each volunteer listing gives part of a description, and you click on MORE to read more – and then you get where the opportunity is, the skills needed, and when volunteering is needed.   They even suggest good matches for the job!

**** On the United Way of the Greater Seacoast click on the Volunteer tab.  Then

  • Click on Find a Volunteer Opportunitycolored bar
    • There are three pictures, labeled Education, Income and Health.
      • Click into each word (not the picture), to check out opportunities.  There are a few in Portsmouth, but not too many
      • The Find A Volunteer Opportunity search area does not yield any opportunities at the moment, so it appears not to be working.  But maybe it will one day.
      • The next area, Live United is worth exploring – it has really interesting opportunities listed a couple of clicks away
  • The other colored bar is Search the Volunteer Calendar. This is a cool area that gives some of the activities of United Way on any given day.  Click on one and read.

And please really consider volunteering.  Some volunteering is maybe 2 hrs once a week, or maybe a half day.  But some opportunities ask for more – and that may be just what you are looking for.  Or someone is looking for you…  So give it a try!

Sit and Exercise

Now you may think all exercise is a walk outside or in the mall, maybe a bike ride in the mountains.  Or maybe you think you cannot exercise.

Ah, but even sitting people need to exercise.  That is people sitting by choice in the workplace, or sitting not by choice – in a wheelchair.

So let’s get to it!  There are a bunch of web sites out there with ideas.  Look carefully before plunging in, however.  Also – talk with your doctor and/or physical therapist.  Start small!!  You don’t want to injure yourself.

**** One place to get started is Sit and Be Fit.  This is a nonprofit created by Mary Anne Wilson, RN.  You might want to begin by exercising along with video #1 on YouTube.   This video is about 26 minutes long, with a 1 minute introduction and disclaimer.  Exercises are nice and slow!  Once on this area of YouTube, you can explore other Sit and be Fit videos and pick the ones you like – maybe a different one each day?

If you cannot access videos, don’t worry – these exercises are listed in the Quick and Easy Energizer Chair Workout for Seniors.  If you want to find other exercises, there’s a whole list under the tab Health Tips.  I have a brother who might like to take a good look at the knee exercises!

If you cannot access the Internet, don’t worry!  Just go to your local TV station to exercise.  No excuses! Here is a list of PBS stations with Sit and Be Fit in the NH area.

**** Exercises for Seniors in Wheelchairs is on the LiveStrong web site.  This is a commercial web site related to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.   So there are a whole bunch of ads you can just ignore.

There are links on this site that have exercises slightly different from those on the Sit and be Fit web site.  So you might like them for a change.

**** Bottom Line?  Sit there on your bottom and do it!!!

Exercise the Mind

May is Older Americans Month.  The motto is “Never too Old to Play.”  I say, let’s change that to “Never too Old to Get Involved.”  Brain activities are recommended.  So, let’s get to it.

****Let’s go to Politifact.  And please do not think that the only thing you can get here are boring facts.  They are so interesting – and they make you think.  Go to the top menu, and find where it says “Truth-o-Meter.”  When you click on it, choose “By Subject”  on the drop-down menu.  Let’s choose “Medicare” (the list is alphabetical).   There are actually 6 pages devoted to assessing truth or fiction associated with statements about Medicare.  You can click on the words underneath each Truth-o-Meter to read in more detail.  There’s tons to read.  So exercise that brain!

The lead story on Politifact on April 30th was Who to blame for the price at the pump? Click and read!

The top menus allow you to check out individual presidential candidate statements, information from some states, promise meters, and more.  Check them out!

****Let’s now go to FactCheck.org.   This site looks more like a newsletter.  The top menu is hard to read.  But click on Ask FactCheck, and you get a nice list of items you might have heard on the news or in a coffee shop.

Then there’s the Viral Spiral, also on the top menu, which gives the truth about virus emails you may have received.  Click on a question, and you will be taken to a new page with the full email, and the full facts, too.

The FactCheck Wire responds to questions or statements by candidates.  Click on one of interest, and you will see the video of the ad or campaign stop where the claim is made.  Then the claim is fact0checked, giving you plenty of detail to think about.

****We’ll be back next week with ways to exercise that body, too!

Older Americans Month Schedule

May has been designated as Older Americans Month. And the theme for Older Americans Month 2012 is “Never to old to play”
Older Americans Month is 49 years old this year…

A meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens resulted in President John F. Kennedy designating May 1963 as Senior Citizens Month, encouraging the nation to pay tribute in some way to older people across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter’s proclamation changed the name to Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate those 65 and older through ceremonies, events and public recognition.

Well no matter what name one employs it all amounts to the same thing. May is the month we celebrate being an older American.

To help celebrate Seniors’ Magazine is expanding to 2 hours every Thursday morning. Two hours of news, interviews, music and even commentary of interest to seniors.

More on May as Older Americans Month with lots of exciting things happening on the air and at our website as we celebrate with you.

Programming for May starts on May 3rd talking about Senior Companions. Seniors volunteering to be with, help with, hang out with other seniors. Maybe helping with putting away groceries, reading a book, playing whist (or cribbage in my case) going for walks with or driving someone to church or bingo.

We continue on May 10th we start a two part series talking about dating once one reaches a “certain age”. Whether one is suddenly single again after many years of being with a soulmate or whether one is still single but enjoys the company of others there is no question that hanging around a noisy bar is not a easy way to meet and talk with people. So how does one meet people as an older American? By utilizing an online dating service of which there are many? Interesting but not necessarily secure. By wandering the aisles of a grocery store? By joining a Mahjong or Bridge club? By volunteering? All very interesting and on May 10th we will try to shed some light on how others have gone about dating.

On May 17th in the second part of our dating series we will be talking about Seniors Sexuality including Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). Yep, a growing problem among the seniors dating set.

One May 24th we will start a two part series on downsizing. Moving from a large house to a condo or to an assisted living situation or moving in with offspring or partner. All those knick knacks, chests of drawers, paintings, books and mementos kept and stored for years may have to be sold or given away. Some stuff may well be valuable and will have to be appraised, some stuff handed down to relatives and friends. A lot of tough choices to make. We will be talking with some people have downsized or are going through the process.

Then on May 31st the second part of the downsizing series we will be speaking with experts in the field of downsizing.

Coming up in June and beyond:

  • Domestic Abuse
  • Pets and Seniors
  • Medicines
  • Seniors and the job market
  • Travel

Regular segments planned:

  • Fraud & Scams
  • Nutrition
  • Legislative Updates
  • Service Link

Keep checking back at our website for more information.
